I have some questions about buying an imac from amazon.com. mainly with the apple store, you can choose the specs you want your computer to be(within reasonable limits) but it seems with amazon.com you can ony choose from the basic iMac 17" basic iMac 20" and so on and so forth. is this true? is there any other reseller that i can buy from that will give me the spec choice i want? if so please tell me about it. i really dont want to pay the $150+ i will have to pay in sales tax.

options, options...

Lots of ways to go!

You can get a rebate here:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/100268/

that will take care of some or most.

You can get refurb:

Refurbished iMac 20-inch 2GHz Intel Core Duo
512MB (single SO-DIMM) 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
250GB Serial ATA hard drive
Slot-load 8x double-layer SuperDrive
ATI Radeon X1600 graphics with 128MB GDDR3 memory
Built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0 for $1449 shipped
which apple says is 15% off

then add third party ram for about 1/3 the cost of apple's (lost of threads around on the best places to buy it).

Or all of the above and save a bundle!!! :p

There aren't a lot of options if you're going with the 17-inch iMac though. Hard Drive and memory. That's it. You're right though, you can't do build to order.

I got mine from Amazon. In fact, I buy most of my Macs from Amazon. They are number one. The rebate, the customer service, etc. I really like them. I bought memory from OWC.

Almost the same for me with Amazon. I just got my rebate back for my 20" iMac (Core Duo) and bought the Ram at www.datamem.com this time :) If there was a huge difference with a BTO then I may have bought it from the Apple Store but no tax and the $150 rebate made it to good of a deal for me to pass up this time around not to mention I got a thing for free overnight shipping (adds to CS, I thank you).
Tax and a rebate = $$$ as I think I saved about $300 which bought other things and that = :D
