Questions about changing IMEI number

I purchased an iPhone and jailbroke it. A few months ago, I ended up having the battery die and I replaced it. I had a problem with the repair and that turned into a nightmare. Anyways, the phone is fixed!

Anyways, I want use the EDGE data that is on my family's plan. I'm a grad student and since I'm on campus most of the day I don't need the 3G connection. We have WIFI.

I called ATT and they want to change the data plan from EDGE to 3G. It's an extra $20 a month. I know not much, but I don't need the plan and it would be money that I'd rather use else where.

I was told I can just change the IMEI number and ATT won't know the difference. I went to iClarified and saw the instructions to do it.

Do I need a new phone or can I just change it to my old BB phone's IMEI number? Can they find out that I changed the IMEI number?

Also, iClarified states:

Unlock and Imei changer will work ONLY on 4.6 BL (112 and 113 ootb).

What is BL? How do I check it?

BL is bootloader, and theres a cydia program to check it. I think its called fuzzyband. As for your IMEI, thats kind of tough. If they see a blackberry IMEI but see you making calls from an iPhone, they will probably think something is weird.

Yes, there is. I don't want to spend an extra $20 a month. That is very legitimate. I'm not under contract with them.

Rather, it is unethical (but unfortunately, not illegal) for ATT to force me to use 3G, which is a service I don't need.

Well, I've been making calls for 4 months using the iPhone without the data plan. They never questioned me about it or contacted me for using it.

But since I now have the option for MMS, I'd like the data plan to use it. Until recently, I just used my school email to get my MMS photos, even though my family is on the family EDGE ATT plan.

Since I was on campus all the time, this wasn't a problem due to campus wide WiFi. This semester I'm not taking 20 grad credits, so I'm not living on campus like I was. Therefore, getting the phone to use the data plan, is nice. I only need it for MMS and emails when off campus. I have no use for the 3G.

How often do you use the EDGE connection?
You could always just cancel all data, save an extra 10 bucks a month, and just use wifi all the time.

EDIT: Was writing during your last post.

As others have said, if you change the IMEI, ATT will notice. They've been Big Brother ever since they started charging the 30 data plan.

No it most certainly is not. Jailbreaking is 100% legal, and is even protected by special rules issued by the U.S. Copyright Office exempting user modifications to phone software for the purposes of removing carrier locks. Whatever Apple tries to tell you, there is nothing illegal about any jailbreaking or unlocking software (with the exception of the abortive SnowBreeze, which contained copyrighted Apple code).

Great, I guess I'll just cancel the data plan in that case. Delta Alphas at ATT would rather lose $30 a month than gain $10.

I look forward to the day iPhones are no longer an ATT exclusive.

The OP proves being in grad school doesn't mean you are intelligent (facts wrong about jailbreaking), honest (trying to do something illegal) or mature (accuse others of what he's trying to do). The irrelevant explanation of why he wanted to do something illegal (change IMEI) was a poor attempt at rationalization.

move along, not one here is going to help you with illegal activity

jailbreaking will void your warranty but its not illegal


changing IMEI's is on a completely different level


Btw you're making the rest of us grad students look bad :rolleyes:

Rofl, you got it very wrong, jailbreaking is not illegal... you might to check the exceptions or actually read the DCMA

Also, here... an excerpt for you to read, seeing as you know nothing about the jailbreak.
