I'm trying to sort of "future proof" my Macbook Pro purchase for at least a few years. I do video editing, graphics work, DVD encoding and Authoring. I considered a Mac Pro, but it just seems to expensive to get the TOP of the line model. Plus, I have space limitations where i'm living.
I've decided to get a Macbook Pro for its mobility and power. Apple charges WAY too much for its RAM, so i've decided to upgrade to 4GB of ram by buying compatible RAM from newegg.com.
I'm thinking of getting the 17" Macbook Pro with the high rez screen. 2 GB RAM, (I'll upgrade it easily later.)
My question is, whats the most to of the line model I can get with the Macbook Pro? The hard drive is a concern. I think 160 GB just isn't enough for my everyday storage needs. I'll be buying a 1 or 2 TB external drive for my video and graphics work. But i'd like my personal media library to reside on my internal laptop drive. I already have 40 GB of music. Whats the largest hard drive you can cram into the 17" Macbook Pro? How big will they make them probably in the next 6 months? I've heard they're running into a wall when it come to size for the laptop hard drives. Is this true? It seems to have slown down quite a bit when it comes to laptop hard drive capacity.
What other upgrades can I try and get to top it out? Price really won't be an issue. I just want the top of the line Macbook Pro that money can buy. I almost feel like waiting for them to include eSATA ports on the outside, and a Blu Ray Reader or Burner before I'll buy. Any idea if this is realistic? Could it be possible in the next 6 months? I'm definately waiting for at least Leopard.
Also, when does anyone think they'll have the 17" Macbook Pro with an LED backlit screen? I think I'll definately wait at least for this. Laptops chew up power, and if I could have one that uses dramtically less for the display it would be a real benefit.
Any suggestions?
