Questions about Handbrake and Rip It

Been in the process of ripping and encoding my DVD collection to the Mini for about a month now. Have been using Handbrake only to do the entire process so far, and usually can only get about 3 a day after work.

Today decided to try Rip It to pre-rip a bunch and the queue them up in Handbrake so I can leave it running. The Rip It part has gone really well as I ripped 15 DVD's in a row in a matter of hours.

But now have started the encoding part, and Handbrake is crawling!

When I was using Handbrake for the entire process I was averaging around 30 fps. But now I have all rips queued up and the first is doing around 10 fps! What's the deal? I figured it would be faster encoding from HD instead of DVD.

Also tried to encode Hunt for Red October and it says "Suspected RCE Region 1". Is there any way to remove the region from ripped file?

Hopefully someone has been through this before and can help me out.

I know that mactheripper allows you to set the region to anything you like, including "all", when you rip. Maybe give that a shot. As far as why it's slow in handbrake, I'm not sure. I've only done it on a Mac Pro with multiple discs. Perhaps there's a read/write traffic jam on the HDD, since when you convert straight from the DVD it reads from the DVD and writes to the HDD.

While running Handbrake, open the OSX Activity Monitor and look at the CPU usage meter (Command-2). Are both your processors maxed out at full? If so, then it's probably not a question of the Hard drive being too slow, as it's feeding the program with enough data to keep it running full blast.

I think I fixed the slow handbrake problem. When I was queuing (sp?) up all the movies the last one I tried was the Hunt for Red October. Well with that one possible have region problems it never quit trying to scan source.

So I took all queued movies out of the queue and stopped the super slow encode and restarted. I started over and queued up everything except Hunt for Red October. So far fps is back up to averaging in the 30's. All seems back to normal.

That same thing has happened to me before. HOpefully that was the issue and it's now resolved.

So it looks like the Handbrake problem is all sorted out as I have encoded about a dozen more movies all using the queue and it's running perfectly.

However a new problem has shown up with Rip It. About 1 out of every 10 dvd's will make the superdrive roar and make a loud vibrating sound although I put my hand on the Mini and there is no vibration. Also it bogs down the system with a lot of beachballing, Activity Monitor takes about 5 minutes to open. Most dvd's will take between 20-30 minutes to rip, but on these ocassional "bad" ones they take over an hour. When Rip It is running with the "good" discs the system react like normal.

Anybody ever heard of any of this with Rip It? In the next couple of days I might download Mac the Ripper and see what it does with these "bad" discs.

Noisy Superdrive

Well I finally decided to take the Mini to the Genius Bar and see what they had to say about the noise coming from the Superdrive on some of these bad discs.

As soon as he heard it he said we'll replace the Superdrive. That was Saturday. Got a call today to come and pick it up. Got it and now at home and ripping Cars which was one of the noisy discs from before and........

Whisper quiet!!!! I couldn't even hear the Superdrive spin up!!! So happy I took it in, and now with most my DVD collection behind me I won't have a worn out drive when all finished.
