Questions about iOS upgrading

My PC has been out of comission for a while now and I've just been using my iPad as my only computer.

I would like to upgrade my iOS, since I heard that the recent update fixes the wifi issues. I'm wondering if there's a way to upgrade to the new iOS on someone else's computer without losing my music or documents, and without syncing that person's music to my iPad.

When I updated my iPad (on my regular computer), it did so without having to resync any data or media content. So my guess is that if you hook up your iPad to a computer running iTunes and click "update" (NOT "restore"), you should be able to update without losing any of your media or data. However, if anything do go wrong during the update process, which shouldn't happen, but there's always a slim chance something could go wrong, you could lose everything on your iPad. So, I'm not sure what to suggest. It really is best if you can backup your data and media on a computer somehow.

pretty sure when you hook an idevice to a cpu thats not yours (or different cpu), it wont let you get past the prompt of syncing to the new machine before it lets you mess w/ things such as the software update...
