Hey everyone! I have some questions/concerns about my iMac G5 and some issues I have with it on occassion. I have posted some of this before, but with no real help or solution.
I downloaded a new program today called AppleJack...some of you have probably heard of it. To use it, you must boot up in Single User Mode (SUM) and then type "applejack auto restart" which performs several mainenance checks and repairs that are built into OS X.
The reason I decided it might be worthwhile to download this program is because of these issues:
1) For some time now, I have been experiencing unrecoverable crashes in these games: WarCraft III, Star Trek: Elite Force II, The Sims 2, and Halo. I am forced to hold down the power button on the back of my iMac to force the computer to shut down.
2) When repairing permissions, I get the same permissions that need repaired every single time, with Disk Utility always telling me they were successfully repaired. They are always Widgets and the DVD player.
When I ran the AppleJack set of tests, I got the following results. I ran the tests twice to see if it would happen again:
a. When checking the HDD for errors, it said that the "Header need minor repair (2,0)" then it runs through the test again, then comes back saying that the repair was successful.
b. The whole thing with the permissions....huge list of permissions being repaired.
Both times I ran the test, these same results appeared.
What the hell is going on here? Why am I experiencing these crashes? People before told me it could be due to memory leakage, or the tax caused by the graphics being handled so close to the kernel that it is unstable and causes kernel panics....etc.
Does anyone have any real answers for me, or any suggestions of what I can do about this? And i DO NOT want to wipe the HDD clean and reinstall OS X. That is a Windoze solution, not an OS X solution.
