I have two iPhone 6s's, both of which have serial numbers that qualify for the battery replacement according to this site: https://www.apple.com/support/iphone6s-unexpectedshutdown/
One phone is losing battery power faster than when new, typically dropping to 40% in a day with minimal use and minimal background apps running. The other phone is dropping to zero power each day under the same minimal use. I have not been able to confirm that either phone is suffering from a power-off issue when the battery starts to get low per se.

So, if I bother to make an appointment to have these inspected at an Apple Store, how exactly will they "test" the phones? Will they simply look up the serial numbers to confirm that they have the bad batteries and replace them, or will they argue with me that the batteries are just "old" and the performance is within specs? The Apple Store is almost 80 miles from my house, so I would rather not waste my time if they won't resolve this.

It took two trips for me. First trip they ran the diagnostic and requested me to reset the device and see if that fixed it before they would replace it. My second visit, they replaced it on the spot.

You will get a free battery replacement if you qualify based on serial number. Anything else you will have to pay for as the battery is probably consumed being the device is 2+ years old.

After about 2 years of normal usage, its quite common for a battery to degrade to point of "failing".

ugh, this is starting sound like I should just buy the replacement kit from iFixit and do it myself. Thanks for the comments.

I had the battery replaced in my old 6S, made the appointment and they replaced it. Smooth and easy except when I got home, the Home button wouldn't recognize my fingerprint, restarted it several times, no go. Went back the next day and they ran some tests and sure enough they confirmed that a wire had gotten broken in the first repair. New phone and restored from back up at store, all was well. That was early in the summer, but I still got a new X anyway!
