Questions about updating a jailbroken iphone 3gs.

Hi guys,
I have an already jailbroken and unlocked iphone 3gs currently running on firmware 3.0.1 (7A400). But I would like to update to the new 3.1.2 firmware and then jailbreak and unlock it again.
I would like to know if that is possible with the new blackra1n. Also, should I update directly using iTunes 09? If this is not advisable, what other options do I have of updating?
Has anyone had the same issue before?
Any help will do.

You have two options, and which one you choose depends on how much you trust Geohot's new unlocking solution blacksn0w.

1) The easiest solution is to upgrade to 3.1.2 stock in iTunes, jailbreak with blackra1n, and then unlock using blacksn0w. I did this without any problems, but some people have WiFi problems of varying severity unlocking with Blacksn0w.

2) The safer solution (because it preserves your old baseband and the ability to use the time-tested unlocking solution ultrasn0w) is to create or obtain a custom firmware (.ipsw) file using PwnageTool and shift-restore to that file in iTunes. Then unlock the same way you did on 3.0.1, by installing ultrasn0w from Cydia.

Since you have a Mac, use the Pwnage Tool and Ultrasn0w method.

Takes a bit more time, but very dependable. Go to iClarified for a tutorial.

But there is a wifi fix if you cant do one. I jailbroke mine today. AND I AM SO HAPPY. It took 30 seconds. Literally!! Thank god for hacktivation.

Thanks lots thelatinist & iphone-power. I chose the 2nd option and it worked flawlessly smooth
BTW, besides the ability to arrange icons on iTunes, I've not seen any significant changes in the new firmware.
Or maybe I've not gone through the iPhone yet
