iOS Questions on hiring a developer?

Hello everyone,

I am slowly learning how to program and this forum has been of great help. Thanks! But, at heart i'd like to think I'm somewhat of a business man and have interest in hiring a developer. I really need to address the following questions before I can consider what kind of capital expenditure or business plan I have to come up with to make this work.

A few questions:
1. Where can you go to hire a developer?

2. Do you have to have an office setup with a computer for them to use or do some work from home and meet at starbucks?

3. What is the average rate a developer might charge? maximum or minimum?

4. Is an hourly rate typically applied or is a per project basis fair?

5. Is there an online community to discuss projects and hire developers?

I appreciate the help.

I haven't tried them yet, but check out odesk.com. The average rate there for an iPhone developer seems to be around $30/hour. You can also specify a flat-rate for a job. The developers look like they're mostly from places like India and the Ukraine, which accounts for the competitive rates.

A post on CL wouldn't hurt either, but I can't imagine someone being a full time iPhone SDK developer... maybe I am wrong though.

Craigslist...Digg apparently is a good place too...don't forget GetAFreelancer.

They would love you if you did that for them. But really, it's generally work from home. Whether you meet at Starbucks or do it all online is up to you.

It depends. Some developers work at an hourly rate. Some can set a price. Others want commission from the App Store profits. As for rates, I'd say some developers can go $50/hr and some can go higher. Per project, some can go from $200 to $1000+.

5. Is there an online community to discuss projects and hire developers?

I think unreleased projects are still under NDA. But there's official Apple developer forums. Most developer forums prohibit the hiring of developers (at least out in the open...like this forum).

Wow, I can't believe people value their time so low. I charge more for programming (in general, not just for the iPhone) than the highest per-hour rate mentioned in any of the above posts and I have to TURN DOWN WORK because I have too much

Cheap Quality

You sound like you're from the US, but have you thought of going overseas, not to India, I was thinking more of a country where we have many things in common, but where our dollar has tanked compared to yours. You could probably get developers much cheaper, and you'd still be getting quality, and someone who can speak your language well.

10 Points if you can guess the country I'm talking about.

I would charge a fee, except that I'm only going to accept work that I can sell, and it's just another complication. My money goals are only to get through college right now, not to get a full time job.
