iPod questions on ipod-buying today maybe

Ok, this is a last minute thing. Some things to know first. I have about 40gigs of music. Of which 4gig is about what I really listen to. I want something to play that on. I don't listen to music on the go much, but it would be nice to offload all my music on to something. I would like to use the player mainly as a way to move large files between my pc's and maybe to my mac.
Is the 60gig color ipod the way to go? I can get a bran new one from apple store for about $369+tax.

I never used a ipod but is it easy to do what I listed above? does ipod catorize well?

i dont know what 'catorize' is...

but the iPod will do what you want it to do... play music and tranfer files... the new color screens are very nice- easy to read

I think you mean categorize? And yes, the iPod has a really good internface, thats one of the reasons its the best. It does sound like the 60 GB model is the one for you, because you're probably going to want to keep all your music on it.

Most people will tell you to not delete your music off your harddrive after transferring it to your iPod, for syncing reasons as well as you don't want to lose all your music if something happens to your iPod.

iPod is perfect for what you want to do. That is what it is designed for. There's nothing wrong with the 60GB either. That sounds like a good choice for you. Personally I would like to keep all 40GB's of music on it, but you may not. Whatever you choose to do the 60GB would probably be the best choice for you. Its always nice to beable to transfer giant files in "one trip." I would go with the 60GB and the price on those is definatly awsome right now. They have lowered in so much recently that it is no longer a rip-off. I would go with a 60GB iPod! hope you enjoy it!

well I picked it up. its charging now.
I hope its semi fast at transfering files. And while it's too late now, how easy is it to transfer and store files on the ipod? Can I take that usb cable that came with the ipod and just plug it into any computer and it will be recognized as a harddrive?

Congrats on your iPod! Should beable to take it anywhere and it will be reconized easily. I know my printer wasn't working one time so I uploaded what I needed to print on my iPod and took it to school. Was able to very easily plug in to an iBook at school and print from there. My iPod has helped me many times to transfer stuff between my mac at home and the macs at my school. Should work the same way on Windows. You might have to have iTunes installed on Windows though... I'm not sure.... Maybe not though. Who knows, it is Windows after all.....

Boy transfering about 5000 songs takes forever. About an hour. and I shrunk it down to about 21gigs of songs. Seems much longer than it should for up to 400mbps. But I guess that's like watching a pot boil.

Oh, about updating the software. Looks straight forward but boy is apple ass backwards with it. Two choices update or restore. You would figure going from 1.1 to 1.2 of software is an UPDATE, but its not. You can't choose update. But if you choose restore it updates it to 1.2. Good thing I didn't do my song transfer till I did the update.

And is it just me or does plugging in this ipod into the computer to use as a harddrive takes a long time to be found? I think I must've done the unplug/replug like 3 times and each time it takes at least 25-35seconds for the computer to find it. My portable harddrive (one of those that require no power and plugs into a 2.0 usb port) is found and usable in about 5-10sec. Does it look for itunes or something?

Oh one last question for now, when itunes first synced it named my ipod "startreak's ipod". Now I noticed it labeled my ipod "starstreak'" in windows. If I change the name in windows, will it screwup my itunes and I have to resync everything again?

Lastly, there has got to be an easier way of using itunes. Ok, I'm new to this. I told it to look in my music folder. When it got done, I used that feature that copies my mp3 to an ipod folder thinking this would help alot and I had dups in the playlist. This is a playlist I'm looking at in itunes right? Not a listing of all my music? So the only way to remove the dups is go and delete every dup one by one. Needless to say, 1 hour to weed the dups was not fun. And since all of this was copied to my ipod folder, it removed about 4 gigs of dups. PLEASE tell me there was an easier way to clean the playlist.
