iPhone Questions on unlocking iphone 4

Girlfriend has a Iphone 4 from at&t. She needs to unlock it for tmobile and I am very familiar with jailbreaking, rooting, but this would be my first unlock. Just like jailbreaking and rooting I like to be very familiar with what I am doing and knowing all the information I can before I start. I have searched but get alot of those phony google sites. What do I need to know about unlocking and what are the steps. Also what versions can be unlocked at the moment? She is running on 5.1

Looks like her baseband is 04.12.01
 
try contacting at&t 1st they are unlocking out of contract phones now. they dowant you to be in good standing with them but even if your not it's worth a try or ask a friend that is. this way you have a 100% factory unlocked phone. :D other then that we need your firmware version and baseband info...
 
is there a way to persuade them?? She just got her iphone in february and they said they cant unlock it till her contract is up. Is there away around this like put it on someone elses number with at&t and have them call?

Nope. It goes by the device-specific IMEI number.

sure pay the ETF which she should have to pay any way if she's going to t-Mobil. That's it

She doesnt havet to pay ETF because someone in her family is taking over her line on at&t

well the only way to get at&t to unlock it is pay ETF, complete the contact or a soldier going overseas to say Afghanistan. you can always try though the worst they can say is no..
