Hello. I was just wondering, with an iPhone what type of plan should I get (rogers), I plan to use wifi more then data network, and mostly text messaging. Also does the iphone automatically change to a wifi network rather then a data network when you are around wifi access? Next, when you download anapp does the price go on your phone bill? Are there ringtones for the iPhone? Please give detail

I can answer only some of your questions. I don't know Rogers plans, so no advice from me there.
The iPhone can be set to detect new Wi-Fi networks and ask you if you want to join. Even if you have that option turned off (as I do), once you have logged on to a particular wireless network, the iPhone will recognize it when you are in range and switch automatically to it and stop using the cellular network for data.
When you download an app, it is charged to your iTunes account. Either you will have an iTunes gift card credit there or you will need to supply a credit card when you register, against which your purchases are charged. They do not appear on your phone bill.
You can make your own ringtones for the iPhone by a variety of methods, most of which you can find by using the search feature right here on the forum. Personally, I use Garage Band for this purpose, which makes it very simple. But there are other straightforward ways to do it too.

iphone struggles
My boyfriend, who has t-mobile service just purchased an I phone through a friend of a friend. (which could be a red flag) It was supposedly unlocked and jailbroken. He put his sim card in and seemed to work for about a week. He then connected his phone to itunes and he had the box checked that does automatic updates. After that his phone went out. So on Sunday he ran across somebody that jailbreaks iphones we paid the guy 25 dollars he used what was called Quickpwn software, and he told us to never update through itunes because it will make the phone go down again. I also asked him if certain applications that can be downloaded could also cause his phone to go down and he said no...I'm no expert but I think that's a crock. But is it true? Personally why would the guy invest in the software if he wasn't having the same issues as everone else? But maybe I'm being to skepticle! So last evening my boyfriend is looking up apps and starts downloading them and what happen? You guessed it! This is the 2nd time that it's happened and want to know what preventative measure we can take to keep this from happening again, if it's not too late. I have heard a lot of people say that they have no problems with their phone once jailbroken and others say they are always having issues. There are so many stories out there and so hard to tell the true from the false! PLEASE HELP!!!!

Intersting question - I think it does. When I turn mine on Airplane mode and then load Google maps, it says to turn off airplane mode or use W-Fi. When I search for my current location, it says it cannot be determined. So for it to work, you do need data access. GPS will be useless when you are out if you don't use the cellular data network. What I am less sure about is how GPS works if you are on Wi-Fi. But I think it probably is pointless to worry about that.
GPS uses, GPS. To plot on a map, it needs data.
So if you are in Wifi, that's where the data will pull from. But most likely you are using GPS walking/driving around so it'll use cellular.With Wi-Fi on and the phone set in airplane mode so no cellular data is involved, Google maps will find your location. So it will get GPS data over Wi-Fi. As bytethese said, that's pretty useless though. Why would you need to use GPS if you are stationary in a Wi-Fi hotspot?

I suppose if you know someone with an iPhone on a regular plan, you could ask him/her to do a GPS query at a particular time and then review the bill later to calculate how much data was actually used and then calculate the cost on a plan that has no data included. I'm guessing you won't like the answer.
