iPod Quick classic question

Hi: I'm going to get my UMB as soon as a update and might as well get a free ipod. I was thinking of getting the touch to sell but I was wondering if I could use the classic as an external HDD only? I have an iPhone and a 30gb ipod that I don't use all that much already.

My question is: Can I use it like a strict external HDD to back up all my files or even clone my HDD?

Also, can I use it as a HDD and an ipod at the same time?

I believe I have disk use quicked on my other one, but the classic would work out with way more space than I need and I always have an ipod instead of a external HDD.

I guessing this isn't a good idea as I have has to restore my ipod before and wouldn't want to lose my data.

Yes. I use my iPod for both playing music and storing files.

Since I got a newer Classic, I use my old 2g iPod as a backup firewire Tiger boot drive. There used to be horror stories about people quickly burning out their iPod hard drives by using them as regular filesystems because they weren't meant for continuous use. I can't say whether that's really true, or whether newer drives may be better equipped to handle it. As I say, mine is only used as an emergency disk.

I've heard that too, and it's discouraged me from using my ipod as a regular external hard drive. my first ipod was a 30 GB ipod photo, and I went through 3 of them (all with failed HDDs) in about 13 months. I was finally upgraded to a 30 GB ipod 5G from applecare. when I got the 5G, i completely stopped using my ipod as an ext drive, and have had no problems with it whatsoever.

Thanks guys- I figured it wasn't the greatest idea except for an emergency back up. I guess I'll just get it or the touch and sell it to cut the cost of my purchase.
I'm done with carrying around an entire collection of music when I won't listen to 95% of the stuff on it and rather just keep must haves and new albums on it.
