Quick iCloud explanation

So far I am understanding everything that goes along with ios5 except for iCloud.

I first set up iCloud on my ip4 using my personal email address @gmail.com

I have just now created a @me address.

Under my mail settings I have my work email, my personal email (gmail) and now iCloud email (@me)

I am confused about this:

Under iCloud in settings I see: Account- and then my @gmail.com account and when i click on it under advanced I see my @me account

Under Mail settings I see: iCloud:Account:mad:gmail.com

How do all of these account tie together? I am clearly lost as to how this works.
