Quick, internet Help

A friend is trying to get internet to a computer using os x, I'm not there, he's not a mac person, he tried connecting it, no internet, tried ping no ping, went to network, said ethernet was connected but no ip was assigned, tried to renew the thing didnt work. All setting are automatic, whats wrong??

what are you using, dial up? dls? cable?

its either cable or dsl, what would be the differences??
