I went to my local cl!ck photo place just to check it out, thinkin the prices would probably be ridiculous... but they had a D50 with 28mm-80mm lens for only $499! That's lower than any price I've found on the internet. I'm 17 and just beginning photography, it's my first camera. It seems like a great camera to start with. Is that a good deal/good camera for me? Thanks a lot!

It's usually $100 more online. That seems like a good deal. I might have to check out local camera shops for one now instead of online since I'm planning on buying one soon.

The 28-80 lens is not something they would sell many of. Look like they are trying to get rid of them by givingthem away free when you buy a D50.
It's about right for a film camera but in my opinion not wide enough for the Nion digital cameras. But at 499 it's like "buy a D50 and get a free lens. The 28-80 is Nikon's lowest price lens butthe quality is good and itwas a macro mode that isusfull for small objects like flowers. I have one of these. It's a good sharp lens but slow (f/5.6 I think) and no wide on a d50
The normal "it lens" for the D50 is the 18-55. The d70 kit lens is the 18-70.

You will e want a wider lens 28 is not wide. 80 is long enough for any kind of "people shots" and far to short for wildlife, birds and the like. But "free" what the heck?
I'd rather have the 18-55 mm because you can take wider photos at 18 mm than you can at 28 mm (it's similar to "zooming out" with any other point and shoot camera), but it almost seems free anyway, so just take this camera + lense. It's a great deal for that camera if you're getting a free lense.
I would probably never use that lense if I already have an 18-55 mm, though. At 28 mm, the 28-80mm doesn't shoot wide enough, and at only 80 mm, it doesn't shoot long enough to be a mid-range telephoto. At least the regular 18-55 mm D50 kit lense allows you to shoot wide at 18 mm, and at the most generally useful range of around 50 mm focal length.
It's your choice, but I'd rather have the 18-55 mm since I seem to either take wide shots at 18 mm (or under 18 mm if possible, which it isn't right now because the 18-55 mm is the widest lense I have
), or I need to zoom very far in (say between 60 to 200 mm), and use the other focal lengths less often. This one does neither, really.
I guess the 28-80 could be used for general photography at family events and holiday parties where the 35-50 mm range is useful.
