Quick Logo Critique

This is an logo that I made for my moms, its her little side business. Now this is no where near done and is the 1st draft. The color green is too bright and the SUE part is alittle bigger and the grass needs to be little thinner. Please tell me what you think?

Are you saying that I should have an illustration?
 
How are you planning to use this logo? Website? Business Cards? Signage?

If you intend on doing any printing, keep in mind you need to build it in CMYK. The green you're currently using is out of gamut (i.e. CMYK can't produce that color green, as it's out of the range of the ink mixtures).

Secondly, what sort of business is it? Landscaping? Lawncare? I'm guessing something dealing with yards.

I like the stylized grass. But keep in mind if you were to use it [the stylized grass] on something small a business card, it may not read as well as on a large sign.

I'd encourage you to work on the typography a bit. Something about the really round Avant-Garde-ish font isn't really connecting with the stylized grass down below.
 
Thanks, the font was picked just to have an idea. Your right with the grass. It would be used for stationery/invoices.

If she does landscaping I would change the font to one with more curve. I'd also lose the "grass/lawn" image and just stick with the words, perhaps stack the "by Sue" under "Yards" and use two green color variations to distinguish the two. Space out the lettering so "by Sue" is the same length as "Yards".
 
I like the idea of the grass, but I'm not sure if you'll be able to successfully incorporate it into your logo. It's not going to read as grass when it shrinks down onto letterhead.

Perhaps try a leaf or a few blades of grass around the logo.

As for a color palette, I'd suggest something earth-toned.

Not sure what to tell you about the font. I don't like the rounded/curvy font. But I do think you should stick with a sans-serif.
 
Thanks for all the comments/suggestions I'm really going to try many different styles.
 
maybe use a large leaf for the background with a serif font for "Yards" and a nice simple script for "by Sue"

What does she do really...this looks more like lawn care...does she design gardens, landscaping, yard art, lawn maintaince, what? That would be helpful. IF she picks up fall leaves I say the leaf design looks great. However, if you are trying to convey she makes great green and healthy garden designs then don't use the leaf as it conveys fall, dying, drab colors. If she does flower gardens then use colorful flowers or at least colors.

I second the business card, sign, etc. info as well- we need to know how it is being used.

More info would be helpful.

The palate is good. My suggestion would be to simplify the layout a bit. Irregular type baselines can get a bit confusing to the eye. Maybe try dropping "by" down to the same baseline as the other type or centering it up vertically. Another thought is to make the grass taller, even bending it some as if it's needing to be cut and dropping all the type next to the grass.

It's a very fun look. Keep plugging away at it. Good luck!

I like the logo too. Also, a completely random question... but is your username from Johnny Quest?
 
i would shorten the grass, I wouldn't want a gardener that left the grass as high as it is in the logo.

The first thing that came to my mind was a play on the word yard with a yard stick, but that might confuse the business with a taylor or seamstress
 
wow...i didn't realize that many people had responded to this. Thank you all for your comments. It was just a really slow day at the agency when i did it, and i thought it would be fun. It's far from perfect or print ready and everytime i look at it i dislike it a little more, but i was just trying to give the op some ideas.

Snips: as far as how i did it. I was actually inspired by the typeface. The "d" already had this curving almost leaf feel to it, so i got out my trusty sketchbook and drew some ideas until i found what i wanted. Then it was simply transposing that into Illustrator.
