Quick question about 4.4.2

I understand that you can use the Chromecast app to cast a full screen video to a Chromecast but this requires an android version of 4.4.2 (or higher).

I'm looking at asus tablets and see that there are some low end devices advertised with 4.4 kitkat.

Is there a 4.4.0 and 4.4.1 that I need to avoid or will any version of 4.4 cast a tab?

(I hope this makes sense - I don't know much about this platform)

4.4.0 to 4.4.4 are all KitKat, but the feature you want is on 4.4.2 and higher. Simply advertising KitKat 4.4 doesn't give enough specificity for the product. If you want a cheap tablet, that has the latest and greatest OS, why not just get the Nexus 7 (2013 version). It is only around $100 these days brand new. You can probably get a used one for $50.

All Nexus 7's are already funning Lollipop, so they are on 5.0.2 or 5.1.

And I'm sure you can Google search and find a Nexus 7 deal online without my assistance.

Interesting.. I can certainly use Google effectively. The problem is every Nexus 7 I find is running 4.3 or lower according to the product specs. I thought you might know something I don't.

It is like buying a 5th gen iPod or an iPhone 5S. Out of the box it will probably be on iOS7, and then will prompt you to update when you power it up for the first time. This is the same deal.

Ok, thanks for your help - I get you're saying. I didn't know that - I have a generic Asus tablet with 4.x and it will not update past the installed version that it shipped with.

I purchased a 'Asus Google Nexus 7 Tablet' off Amazon for $109ish. It ships with 4.1 Jellybean but supposedly updates to 5.1 according to someone who recently purchased one.

I just need it for casting videos running in full screen mode to a Chromecast - don't care about anything else.

I'm guessing you actually bought the first gen Nexus (2012) since the second gen version released with 4.3 Jellybean. The first gen unit is not worth $100 and performance now is pretty slow. Cancel that order if not too late.


I'd suggest going to Swappa and picking up a used 2013 model.

Ok, I'm done. I bought a new one off Amazon for $179. Swappa units were running $110 and up - really over $135 for a tablet in the kind of condition I'd want.

I'd just soon pony up a few more bucks and get new.

Glad to help. The 2013 model is still quite capable and runs Lollipop quite well. I picked one up a few months back for my wife to use primarily as an e-reader and whenever I pick it up to run updates for here, etc, I find it still offers a very smooth user experience.
