I have never used a Mac Mini before and I am thinking about getting one for my living room HDTV setup. I have a Yamaha AV Receiver with HDMI input, so I assume I can simply run the HDMI output from the Mini to my receiver and have both video and audio, right? My receiver should decode the audio and pass on the video to my TV, right?

Now then, I have MKV movies with multi-channel audio and I was wondering if that will play on my receiver as multi-channel or will it get downmixed before hitting the receiver?

Also, what if I play a purchased TV show or movie with iTunes on the Mini - will it play in multi-channel audio through the HDMI port to my receiver?

Thanks.

With the good playback programs like VLC, you can decide how the audio is dealt with. You can choose to decode and transmit as PCM multichannel, or just pass the original DTS or DD. You can also tweak syncing, as most of the time either the image or the sound gets delayed.
