quick question about unlocking a new iphone....

Hey all, ive been reading all sorts of problems and solutions etc on here and am slightly confused.

i am about to buy a 16gb iphone and would like to use my vodafone simcard.

what is my best option? ziphone? im guessing i need to activate it and unlock it?

am i likely to encounter any problems? what wont work after?

can i use vista or just do it via my virtual xp(vmware fusion)?
