Quick question about wireless keyboard and mouse...

My new iMac should be arriving here probably sometime next week and I just had a question. I seemed to have read somewhere that the apple wireless keyboard and mouse that i ordered with the imac wont work with the imac right out of the box, but instead I gotta attach a usb keyboard and mouse and then choose the right settings to get them to work. Is this true?

It's not really a big deal, I'm sure i could dig up a regular mouse somewhere around here, I just think it's kinda stupid that the computer isn't ready to recognize a wireless mouse/kbd from the start. What about people who dont have another computer and ordered the wireless stuff with their mac? They have to go and find someone who has the wired peripherals or even worse, go out and buy a usb kbd/mouse just to set up their wireless ones?

I'm not 100% but I think all you need to do is make sure the KB and mouse are very close to the machine when you turn it on for the first time. It'll pair them up and away you go.

I'm just downloading the iMac user's manual, I'll give more info when I find it.

Couldn't find anything in the manual, you could call Apple and see what they have to say. I'd be surprised if Apple haven't figured out getting a wireless KB and mouse to work right away if they pack them in. You should be right but someone else might be able to chip in with some more info.

Use a Wired USB Keyboard and Mouse During Setup
During the setup process, you'll need to use a USB mouse before the Apple Wireless Mouse can work. Keep a USB mouse connected to the computer until you've completed setting up the Apple Wireless Mouse. After setup is complete, you can disconnect the USB mouse.

Setting up the mouse
Follow these steps:


1. Turn the mouse over.

2. Turn off the mouse by sliding the power switch until the light is covered.

3. Open the Bluetooth Setup Assistant.The Bluetooth Setup Assistant is located in the Utilities folder.

4. Click Continue.

5. At the Select Device Type panel, select Mouse. Do not click Continue yet.

6. Turn on the mouse. The light should begin to flash.

7. Click Continue. The mouse's name should appear in the device list of the Search pane.

8. Select the mouse in the Setup Assistant listing, then click Continue. The assistant will try to pair with the mouse.

9. Once the assistant says the computer and mouse have successfully paired, click Continue.

10. Setup is complete. Click Quit.

so i guess it looks like i was right...oh well.

Follow the intructions when its arrives. If the Mac cannot sense a USB KB and Mouse, and it has Bluetooth (which all Macs now do) - it will search and pair itself to Bluetooth equipment (if available, within a few metres)
