Hiya

Ok i'm about to buy an iPhone from the UK store. I intend on unlocking it so I can use my current O2 contract sim in it.

I just want to know - am I going to be ok buying an iPhone from Apple uk store, as in - I don't need to have a specific firmware to be able to unlock/jailbreak it, do I?

Thanks!
Tom

Quick answer is I would hold on. There could well be a 3G iPhone coming out VERY soon!

The MacRumors has been updated to reflect this.

You can just walk in to an Apple Store/O2 Shop/Carphone Warehouse and buy an iPhone. Activation takes place through iTunes.

There are loads of threads about how to jailbreak the latest firmware.

I can't say about the other parts of the world but if you were in the USA I would hold off. Do the other countries generally get the updates at the same time as the USA???

Obviously all speculative but the impression seems to be this time we all could do.

Especially as in Europe/Asia 3G is generally more widespread than in the US of A I believe where iPhone sales haven't been as impressive as in America.

I am waiting to see what happens. Some rumours are suggesting it could be very soon especially as reports are saying that iPhones are starting to run dry.

Yea I'm gonna havta agree about holding off with your purchase. The 3G models should be out by summer and in heavy rotation by late fall from everything I've read. You should wait for this, even if you don't want the 3G model we should certainly see a price drop in the current models upon its release.

Oh right cool, I didn't know that so thanks for the info guys. :)

I think i'll hold out, not in too much of a rush...:)

Hiya

Out of interest, why do you want to jailbreak it JUST to use your current O2 SIM?

I thought you could upgrade your existing O2 contract to an iPhone one, the tariffs for the texts/mins/internet access seem quite competitive to me.

Cheers

Not just for that. Unfortunately the iPhone tariffs don't come close to the deal I currently have (2500 mins & unlimited texts). :)

Im also from UK and probably going to buy iPhone in next couple of days. Can anyone comfirm that regardless of firmware supplied with the iPhone, I should be able to run "ZiPhone" to unlock, activate and jailbreak which would allow me to use my current o2 contract 3G sim card?
Thanks

Yes you can use Ziphone, everyones in uproar about the downgrading of bootloader if your on 4.6 but I went into my local o2 store the other day and their still selling week 45 iPhones which i think are still on 3.9, so all you will have to do is refurbish iphone using ziphone and upgrade FW when needed.

The BL is not an issue if you have pre week 45 iPhones!

The Only thing I`d be worried about is if the new 3G iPhone will be easily unlockable or not. It will definitely be unlocked at some point of time but who knows when. I bought a 1.1.2 iPhone in November hoping it`ll be unlocked within a week or two. Turns out I had to wait almost 3 months before I could use it.

So you might be waiting more than 2 months in case something like this happens again.

Thanks for reply, thats good to know. Other thing was do they accept cash for iphone in the UK still, I read somewhere that it was banned as a payment method in the US?

Cant help you with that one im afraid, i used my cedit card to pay for mine, i have a sneaky feeling that you will need to pay with some sort of card to give them a papertrail back to you, but i cant be sure!

Don't think the O2 and carphone warehouse stores apprecieated me walking in with a £270 wod of cash and asking for an iphone soo......ordered from apple online instead. Hopefully should arrive soon then I'll just have to run through ZiPhone!
