Quick question on my new iMac

So I know there are tons of threads on fan speeds and temps of iMacs. I havent seen anything that answers my question on my mid 2009 3.06 Ghz iMac.

At what CPU temp will the CPU fan speed up? I was encoding a movie at 100% CPU usage with the CPU up to 140*F which made the upper corner of the iMac fairly hot. I know this probably wont harm anything but I'm still wondering what apple thinks is warm enough to give me some fan.

I have iStat and I can manually adjust the fan speeds to bring the CPU temp back down to about 111*F which to me is a huge difference.

At what temp do the fans go to full speed to cool this thing down? I was surprised to have not heard the fans at all while encoding a movie at 140*F.

Didnt even know what they sounded like until I used iStat to speed them up (and they are loud!)

You should have bought an i3.......

Core 2 duo is honestly old technology which consumes more power and runs to hot. Do some research and understand why you should have bought an i3,i5,i7 lineup.

With that said your in for a world of problems..........

That doesn't answer my question. I also only paid $699 for it brand new so an i3 would not have been worth it. This core 2 duo is fast enough.

It's not about speed my friend, & that $699 you say you spent is going to cost you more in the long run. What part don't you understand that core duo is old technology?


Secondly Apple does not sell an iMac this cheap so you bought it from someone that did who knows what to it.....

Like I said that core 2 duo isn't going to last long.... IF you keep doing what your doing with it.

You do know that these aluminum iMacs should feel hot when you are using them? Aluminum conducts heat in a certain way and that is why especially the back of the iMac can even burn your hand. I'm actually surprised how many people think that the iMac is malfunctioning because of this -- it has been mentioned millions of times that these aluminum iMacs are not the same as plastic computers in terms of how hot they feel. I'm actually a newbie myself.

Didn't buy it from apple. It was a left over model that we had at my bb store because the person who bought it got deployed so it just sat there. Soldier came back and decided he wanted a 27". Sold it to my self at the lowest price I could

And again. Not my question. I know it's probably not hurting anything. It's in my original post. I just want to know at what temp the fans speed up.

Not worried of it imploding either. It's under warranty for 2 years. If something happens I'll swap it out.

60° C (140° F) is a very okay temperature for 100% CPU usage in an iMac. The fans will rev up when the CPU gets really hot, 80°C and up, as the aluminium back is good at conducting heat.

No need to worry.
