Quick RAM question

Sup guys

Like most of you, I'm waiting for the new mini model to come out in the next couple months. I was browsing amazon today looking for 16GB kits (2x 8gb). I'm just wondering if it'd be smart to go ahead and purchase it to be ready for the new Mac Mini release. Is there any chance that if I buy the memory now that it will NOT be compatible with the new mini?

Yes, there's always a chance it may not be compatible, since you don't know what an unreleased Mac will include. Just think if you bought RAM in advance, thinking you'd be able to use it in the new MacBook Pro with retina display, only to find the RAM is soldered, preventing any upgrades. Also, the longer you wait to buy RAM, the cheaper it will be.

Another question, I'm also looking for external Bluray reader/ writer drives. I know for sure that apple won't throw a SuperDrive back in the new Mac mini model.

Whats the most trustworthy brand, LG?

I keep thinking I should pick up 16GB of RAM for my future 2012 Mac Mini, but I keep thinking "it's gonna get cheaper" and inevitably it does! Heck just a year and a half ago 16GB Kit of matched Sodimms were 1000+ and now you can get for $80 (on sale). And as pointed out, maybe Apple will completely redo the Mini and it might have soldered on memory just like The New Macbook Pro (most likely not since Apple just redid the Mac Mini 2 years ago and they generally go 3-4 years before a revision).
 
I suspect that the new Mini will use 1600 MHz DDR3. I think you should just wait.

Not to hijack this thread, but has anyone tried 16 GB on the Mid 2011 Mini?

1. it may not be compatible
2. ram will always be cheaper next week/month.

almost never..

if you run windows 7 in vmfusion with heavy graphics at the same time using an osx lion with handbrake running all on the i7 server mini you may get noticeable real world improvement.

the above will bog the machine down a bit so the 1600 ram would help speed things up a little. 5% as a guess. I have tested a lot of setups but not the one I just came up with.

Awesome thanks, now I don't feel compelled to go waste more money! :)
 
if i were you I'd save for an ssd instead! intel has a big rebate deal here in the states. we can get a 180 gb ssd for about 140 usd after rebate. maybe this deal will come to 'down under'

Haha I ordered a crucial drive last week, only to notice just after that intel drives have dropped dramatically since last year! I don't mind though, I have an OCZ in my MacBook and even that is mindblowingly quick!

That's not too bad. I'll keep waiting to buy an SSD in hopes that the price will drop even more. How big of a difference in speed is there from lets say, a 200gb had compared to a 200gb SSD?

ON long clones not much. unless the clone is ssd to ssd.

a really good ssd to ssd clone can be 350 to 400MBs .

hdd to hdd is about 90MBs for a laptop.

translation a copy of a huge iTunes library say 300gb is 45 minutes ssd to ssd around 2 and 1/2 hours hdd to hdd.


most speed gain is in small ops. 10x to 20x faster on short small stuff.

if you use a nice size ssd 256gb or 240gb it is hard to ever want to use hdds.

waiting for price drop is smart they will get lower . maybe 100 for 256gb ssd by 2013
