well right now I'm still docked in NYC ( I'm on a cruise) . My brothers fried said when he went on the cruise he had signal in the water. As long as it says att, then I'm not roaming right? Its going to st thomas, puerto RICO and Tortpla. Mabe somene has been here or in my situation before and can help me out. Thanks.

If it says AT&T, you're not roaming.

If it doesn't say AT&T turn the phone off, unless you're okay with high data roaming charges.

Actually, it says AT&T wherever you are. I have toured around quite a bit since getting my iPhone, and it has ALWAYS said AT&T on the status bar. I heard that you can call them and they can turn on a free network feature that will actually tell you if you are using AT&T towers or roaming. IIRC, cruise ships are off-net, so be careful how much you use your iPhone for either calling or data.

Even when roaming internationally? I know that the AT&T flag shows on all AT&T phones if you're roaming in the US, but that's because the roaming is at no charge. Outside of the country though, the network name SHOULD show up. I know that this was the case on a Treo 750 when i was in Toronto (incidentally, during iDay... I missed the launch, heh).

this is the way it worked for me as well when i traveled (different phone, but still on cingular/at&t) to mexico on a cruise. my phone always showed at&t as the network, even while out of the u.s.
