what happened to the functionality of being able to quickly select recent photos after hitting the camera icon? Was way faster in iOS 11

Edit: never mind , hit the photos icon

Not related to this (but don't want to start new thread) -- is there a way now to get rid of the row of app icons (for "stickers" and other add-ons) above the keyboard when you're in a message thread? Used to be able to click a little arrow to collapse them, but no longer(?) Thx

Yep. First start composing a new message. Then select a recipient, any recipient will do as you will not be sending a message to them at this time. Then, tap the App Store -icon next to the camera icon, and the row should disappear. After that, just cancel the message and the row should remain hidden until you summon it again by tapping on the App Store -icon.

Is this what you meant?

Yes, thanks -- that did the trick!

I eventually found out the same thing but wonder why they made it so the camera loads full frame. In iOS 11 it loaded in a little screen with the ability to select a photo location. There is now an extra to attach a photo from the camera roll.

iOS11:
-touch the camera icon
-camera loads in small window also with the ability to quickly select last photos taken
-touch Photos
-touch Camera Roll

iOS12:
-touch the camera icon
-camera loads full frame
-touch Photos
-touch All Photos
-touch Camera Roll

I know it's just one extra step, but that along with the time it takes for the camera to open full frame instead of in the little window makes the whole process seem slower and not "optimized". Especially if you select from one of the last photos taken in the initial window. I wonder what the thought was on how this was a better method. Do more users take photos from withing the Messages app vs. attaching shots already taken?

Do more people really take a photo IN Messages than simply send a photo that was already taken? I hate that the camera loads up. Send me straight to a full screen camera roll.

If you just want to insert a photo just touch the photo icon. No need to mess the camera at all.
It's not really an icon, but an iMessage "app" essentially, which also needlessly requires that whole iMessage app drawer to be open and present and taking up space. That's kind of part of the whole point of things being worse when it comes to all of this in iOS 12 compared to what they were like before.

Yeah, of all the changes in iOS 12, this is the only one I consider negative. What was wrong with the way it worked before? Now sending photos is more awkward. I never use iMessage apps.

Yeah, that and getting rid of the usage/standby times for battery since last charge are both kind of annoying changes that aren't really for the better.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the photo icon is way up top left correct? That’s a long reach one handed compared to when it was down low to pick a photo you want to send.

Nevermind, found the photos icon..

Thanks for this. I always keep the app drawer closed since I rarely use them. But opening it up and hitting the photos icon is still faster than loading the camera, so I guess that’s the way I’ll do it.

That is what they want you to do, they don't make any money when the iMessage apps are not being purchased, so encouraging people to go into the app drawer to complete simple tasks like sending a photo, makes people use it more.

This is not what apple were about years ago, seems to be the way things are going though.

I would have never thought to look in the app drawer to place a photo.

It’s all so they can be like XY people use iMessage apps it’s become a hit! When in fact people just want to attach taken photos easily
