I’ve set up a LOT of new phones, but this is something I haven’t done, and wonder if I can do.

Put a SIM in new phone upon arrival and just set up basic stuff because I have HORRIBLE internet and couldn’t restore from backup here at home.

If I go later to a friend’s to get it completely set up, do I have to erase it completely before I can then restore from the backup, or is there a way I could restore my stuff without having to start all over?

A restore from back up nukes everything on the phone then installs the entire backup. There isn’t an option to pick and choose

I would leave it and wait until you can get to somewhere with decent internet connection, then set it up from scratch 'properly'........

Right, but I could just do that instead of erasing then doing that, or do I have to erase first THEN restore from backup?

I’m heading there now to do it - just didn’t know if I had to fully erase first, or if I can go to the backups and restore without erasing first. I realize it’s gonna wipe what’s there, which is fine.

When a restore from backup is initiated, data erasure is built into the process. It doesn’t need to be done separately. Wiping the SSD only takes a second. Since it’s all encrypted, once the encryption key is deleted, all that data is gone forever

I figured that out, but never could find the option to restore from backup without erasing phone first.
You have to erase the phone to restore from backup. There is no option to restore from backup once the phone has been setup. You have to erase all settings and re-setup to get the option to restore from backup.
