Is there a good tutorial thread, here or otherwise? I'm finally ready to start messing around with it (home Wi-Fi network is finally fully rigged and operational) and just want to know a rundown of the basics like transferring from PC to phone, what directories different things need to go into to work, etc. I tried searching here, I know there's gotta be threads on it, but the search page is being screwy (browsing on my phone). Everytime I hit search it just does nothing, doesn't load or do anything lol.

Quick SSH Question

Have you ever used a POSIX command prompt (Unix, Linux, BSD, Mac, etc.)? If so, the commands are exactly the same. If not, then the learning curve is going to be a little steeper. You should look for a basic Linux tutorial, maybe.
I would try using an iphone file browsing program -- for pc I like ifunbox, I think the one for Mac was called iPhone Explorer or something like that. These programs run from your PC/Mac and lets you browse the iPhone file system over the USB connection. Much easier than SSH, in my opinion. The only thing they don't do is let you change file permissions, but I use iFile to do that.
Yes, I was coming back to recommend iFile. I use it for almost everything now. In fact, with iFile's web server you can browse your iPhone's file system and upload files from any web browser on your local WiFi network; you don't need a separate file browsing app on your computer. You can move files around, copy and paste, rename files, and open almost any file all from within iFile. You can even edit .plist files. I highly recommend it.
Thanks for the info guys. I had iPhoneBrowser before I setup my Wi-Fi but never really used it. I don't have much experience with command line stuff. I wouldn't say zero, but it's minimal. I was just asking about SSH cuz everyone here seems to be fans of it so I was just assuming it was for some reason superior to the USB browsing programs. What does changing file permissions allow? Is it something I would even need, or should I be set with one of the USB programs for doing things like putting custom icons and other aspecs of themes (wallpapers and such) on the phone, and .IPAs to run on the phone?
I would venture to say that most of thus that hang out in this forum are the type that like to use command line POSIX commands, and this is why you often hear ssh recommended and talked about. Plus when the iPhone was first jailbroke, ssh was one of the first things ported over for it, which opened up a world of possibilities for those of us who like command line.
Yeah, SSH is a great way for power users to control every aspect of their filesystem remotely. But with the development of graphical tools it has become easier for those with little command line experience to accomplish the same tasks more intuitively.
Agent 21: Yes, you can do all the things you're talking about without SSH. Most do not require changing permissions at all. I would caution you in advance that this site does not condone use of cracked software, so it is best not to mention IPAs or other such things here.

Oh, and the IPAs on my PC are really just two, one was a free app in the iTunes store awhile ago and when I restored my phone and went to re-DL it i couldn't find it anymore, it was gone, and has been ever since for some reason so I found it after searching Google. The other is a fantasy football manager app that my buddy is working on. Sent me an early version to check out. Not sure if it will even work but I'm helping him with UI ideas (I'm an artist, not a programmer, I know design, not command line lol). I know the rules on pirated software here and should have specified what I meant as to not cause any confusion. I've been comming here since the day I got my phone (3GS launch day). It's provided me with so much info and knowledge, I wouldn't purposely jeopardize that by talking about pirating and getting banned.

I wasn't accusing you of anything; at least I didn't mean to! I was just giving you the warning as a courtesy. Glad our info helped; and yeah, unless you're good with a command prompt I'd stay away from SSH. Too many people copy-paste commands from the web they know nothing about. Wouldn't want someone to direct you to rm -rf ~/*
Developers have a way of allowing beta-testers to load beta apps onto their iphones without jailbreaking involved. Talk to your buddy about this, he should know how to do it, and if he doesn't, he better find out! In any case, you should be able to use iTunes to load IPAs onto your iphone, no need to SSH or otherwise copy them onto your iphone.
