I was wondering if any of you kind people could give me some info on vista 64.

Ive recently updated my 2007 MBP 2.4 with 4GB RAM and I have Leopard.

I understand that XP (probably the professional version) will only utilize 3.2 GB of Ram, where Vista 64 can see more. However, from what I understand, Vista is "bloated" and takes up more RAM to run itself than XP does. So does this even itself out with regards to RAM usage?

So, do you wise people think XP would run better than Vista for what I need? Sorry if this seems a bit of a stupid question!!

I am only going to use Windows for 3d Studio Max 2008, Microstation V8 and a few games like C0D5 and Crysis (if I ever get time to game!)

I have read on these forums that XP is more stable and better for gaming and rendering? Is this a fair assessment? I doubt I will use windows for anything else, so I need to make sure I buy the correct version that best suits me.

Any info or thoughts are greatly appreciated.

This is what we like to call FUD, aka lies and bulls--t. Vista was pretty bad before SP1 was released (which was around February of this year). Since then though, it has been very stable and fast. The differences in FPS in games is like 1fps; pretty much negligible. I've been running Vista 64 since february and it's been awesome. You say you've read on this forum that it sucks. Well, this is a Mac forum, and a lot of people will tell you it sucks because "M$ is teh suxorz". Of course, these people are talking out of their ass. The truth is Vista 64 is a very refined, stable, quick OS. And being able to use all 4 GB of RAM is nice too. :D

So, in summary, yes Vista 64 is very good for gaming, and your machine will bend Vista over backwards. Also, this was covered already in this thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/601669/

thanks stridder.

Has SP1 made vista64 footprint smaller? Ive seen people claiming its only 2GB now instead of 20ish? That would be perfect if true. Plus Bootcamp now provides drivers too.

I only have about 40GB partition to play with. This will have my render and CAD programs as well as a few games. Seeing my full 4GB does tempt me toward Vista64.....

cheers. I will think this over for a bit b4 I go buy.
