Quick way to create this in photoshop...

Hi there,

I was looking for a quick way to create this affect at the top of page found here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/cyclingtheamericas/2010/04/)

The bike with the white outline? Is it as simple as masking round the bike. Adding it ontop of a white layer and then masking around that?

I don't have photoshop on me but would it be that easy?

If I were doing that, first I'd cut out the background of the bike in Photoshop, flatten it so it's on a white background. Then take that image onto a new layer in a new Photoshop doc and mask the jagged outline area as required.

Or I guess one could also use Illustrator to creat the white shape, then paste that onto a layer in Photoshop as a smart object. Then, drop a previously cut out bike onto another layer above the white shape layer.

As is often the case there are many ways to skin a cat

But yes it would be easy.

I may be repeating the last poster's solution a bit...

If your guy/bike is on a white background, you should be able to lasso around the guy/bike, and the use your move tool to drag the selection to the background PS image. That should automatically create a new layer (guy/bike) on top of the background image.

I just spent the last several minutes looking through a long list of acronyms and abbreviations wondering, "what the heck is COB", so thanks for that.

I prefer the Polygon Lasso Tool.

With the Pen Tool, I always want to complete the path around the object and that can get tedious. With the PLT, I can select a smaller area and fill selection on Mask with black... select a small area and fill selection on Mask with black... etc.

It's a better fit for my short attention span.

You can do it by cutting the object out onto its own layer and using Layer Effects. You won't get quite the offset cutout effect shown there but it will give you the outline. There is no "quick" way.

The initial cutting-out of the bike and rider from the background is clean, requiring a bit of work. The white border can be achieved in different ways and is relatively quick and easy. But that initial cut out can't be avoided.

Cheers everyone. I did as told and have come up with a fairly quick but Ok effect which I think looks ok.

I will post a copy tomorrow if I have time!

In the end I had to use pixelmator as my sister didn't have a copy of photoshop on her laptop!
