Hi

I’m loving the new iPad OS but do not like too much the open in new tab pop up at safari. Is there any quick gesture/trick? To avoid waiting for that pop up dialog. Thanks

Tap with two fingers. Though I t's a little awkward imo.

Very carefully 😉

Just tap a link as normal, but with a second finger alongside. I find it awkward and unreliable but YMMV
Is it supposed to open that link in a new tab with the new drop down list sort of thing?

I haven’t gotten that feature down apparently because nothing is happening.

It opens the tab directly without a menu, either in the background or foreground according to the "Open Links" preference for Safari. You can practice it with the Macrumors logo at the top of the page.

Man, I am doing sometime wrong apparently because nothing is happening for me.

Not necessarily. It's difficult to trigger to the point where I'd rather use the menu because I fail so often with it. One thing it often fails for is that theres multiple small links side by side (say, in a menu bar). Inevitably this means each finger is touching a different link when you tap so the gesture is ambiguous and ends up doing nothing.

It really doesn’t seem worth it. I can just go to the menu quicker.

The menu in iPadOS doesn’t have Open In New Tab as an option. They’re so proud of the split window feature (of questionable value in a 9.7” or smaller device) that they essentially deprecated the new tab feature.

Go ahead, open that Wikipedia reference with two fingers. I’m waiting.

[edit] It‘s now called Open In Background. I thought that meant another browser instance, but it’s just another adjacent tab that opens.

It used to be Open in new Tab - and still is if you don’t turn on “open new tabs in background” option. Don’t know why they changed the name, it’s confusing - but works well at least.

This isn’t what you’re asking exactly but it may help, perhaps:

- You can drag any link to the tab bar to open it in a new tab
- If you have a hardware keyboard, tap on a link while holding ⌘ - it will open in a new tab
- Also with a hw keyboard: ⌘ + T opens a new tab
- As others have said, double tapping a link opens it in a new tab. It’s easier to do with image links, but you can do it with text, too. I rarely use it.
- Long press or secondary (right) click on your mouse or trackpad and choose “Open in New Tab” or “Open in Background” (depending on your settings) and it will open the link in the new tab. I use this most of the time.
