I have been very pleased with AirPods over the past couple years. There is one thing that would make them even more useful to me, and that is quicker or automatic switching between devices.

My Bose QC35 headphones connect to my iPhone and Mac simultaneously, so if I'm watching a video or listening to music on my Mac and a call comes in, the audio from my Mac is automatically silenced to allow the iPhone ring to come in on the headphones. I can take the call on the iPhone earpiece, speaker or the headphones. If I use the headphones, the Mac audio resumes when the call ends.

I don't expect the AirPods to simultaneously connect to 2 devices, but it would be great if I could have an option for the AirPods to automatically switch from the Mac and connect to the iPhone when a call comes in, so I can answer the call without taking the AirPods out of my ears.

I can't access the Control Center to connect the AirPods while the call is ringing, so I have to pull an AirPod out of my ear, answer the call on the iPhone earpiece, then pull the phone away from my head to switch to the speaker or AirPods. Then I have to manually reconnect the AirPods to the Mac again after the call. It's a pain when there are many incoming calls during the day.

I looked at the new iOS Shortcuts app, but didn't see anything that would help. Any ideas on how to make this connection switching more seamless?

I don't expect the AirPods to simultaneously connect to 2 devices, ...

From your description that’s actually what you are expecting.
I have the Bose as well and I know exactly what you mean.

However as you know, the AirPods don’t connect to 2 devices and this leaves the following options (there might be more):

1) With “handoff” you can set the Mac to ring and you can pick up the call on the Mac instead of the phone. You even can originate calls.

2) Listen to Music from the phone to avoid the switching.

3) Buy a second set of AirPods.

With Gen 1 and Gen 2 AirPods I now have done all 3 of the above.
