looking for a little guidance here. Running 3.0 on a 3G. Trying to jailbreak for the first time and stuck getting started!

I've read through the sticky above, and most of it seems to deal w/ jailbreaking 2.x rather than 3.0.

Do I begin w/ Redsn0w or Quickpwn?? Quickpwn runs but doesn't seem to recoginize that my 3G is connected, I can't move beyond the initial screen w/ the picture of the 2g/touch/3g.

In attempting to use redsn0w, I can't get beyond the "Browse" for .ispw screen. I can't find the firmware to get it moving anywhere.

Sorry for the stupid questions, I'm sure it's extremely simple but can't wrap my brain around it at the moment!!!

Thanks!

I'm having the same problem, once the redsn0w finishes its "hold this button for this many seconds" step, it just stalls on "Waiting for reboot" while the iPhone is in the off position, it just fails to enter the DFU mode..

Is this similar to your issue?

Hes on a 3g not a 3gs

So you would want to use purplera1n for a 3gs? I am considering jailbreaking, but I have the 3gs and I heard there still may be bugs. I am not new to computers at all, but jailbreaking and everything that comes with it is very, very foreign to me.

my experience

I tried both tools to jailbreak

In the end I found redsn0w to be more stable.

However there are still some programs from Cydia that are no good on either the 3gs/3.0 so be careful

I have had to restore my iphone 5 times so far

Try unplugging and replugging the USB cable at that point. that may kick your phone to reboot
