QuickRes, for those who don't know, is an app that lets you set your Mac to whatever resolution you want. If the resolution is higher than your display can do, it basically takes the maximum resolution and scales it to whatever you're asking.

In my experience you can only go about 1 notch above your displays resolution before things start looking crappy.

I have a 1620x1050 display and I use QuickRes to bring it to 1920x1200. Works like a charm.

Is it a 1920x1200 display? No, There is pixel loss. But not enough for me not to enjoy it.

How many of you use quickres?

So from what I gather from how it works is that it uses the maximum resolution that your screen can output and stretches it to the resolution that you select. Am I correct?

I see there is a high dpi mode I can enable which would make the resolution even better but when I enable it, it seems to only be available to a low resolution.

When I use QuickRes to set MacBook Pro (13 inches) to 1920x1080 and attach a VGA monitor, I cannot see application windows or system windows on the VGA monitor. For example, I cannot see the Finder window on the VGA monitor. On the VGA monitor, I can see the background, the Dock at the bottom, and the Menu Bar at the top with no problems. And I can see a folder icon that I create on the desktop. But no system windows such as Finder and no application windows such as Firefox. Any ideas how to fix this problem?

You can set up which display has your menu bar and Dock in Displays preferences in System Preferences
Move the displays around and or press the button that says Gather Windows

to choose which display gets the menu bar and Dock and set as primary you drag the monitor icon at the top most spot where the menu bar resides and move that around to your other display

I think you can also use it to set an intermediate resolution that is not supported by default in Displays. If you have a 4K display but don't like the full resolution (items too small), you can set it to a lesser resolution that might be easier to see. Sometimes the Display preference only gives you a couple of alternatives and you might want another.

I've also used it when a high res monitor only appears to support 1024 in Display preferences, this will let you override and choose the actual native resolution of the monitor.
