exactly what i was thinking.... posted in general mac section.

figure they may want to show off the streaming features with the keynote too... ie, for those watching the keynote streaming

It's still the public preview! Why do people make such a big deal out of nothing ?

I thought it was something worth getting excited about, beta versions of quicktime don't get near my hard drive, I've had to re install QT5 twice to get rid of 6 from the first public preview version, I'm still having errors with IE crashing once a movie file loads fully, I even deleted all the quicktime browser plug-ins before I installed QT5 again. It's not worth touching till it's finished.

Of course if going to the quicktime page and clicking on the big "QUICKTIME 6 PUBLIC PREVIEW" picture isn't the way to download it and there's a full version installer somewhere on the apple site, any chance of putting up a link to the download page ?

DOH!

It's here I couldn't find a link to it on the quicktime page earlier.

wow. i just took a 38 second piece of dv.... and encoded it at mp4... with all the settings at the preset, except i kept the size at 720x480...

the original file was 137.6 megs

the mp4....... 1.8 megs!

it looks/sounds pretty dang good. i'd assume with a smaller window size and slightly more tweaked settings, one could really really compact some good size movies into small files.... this is promising.

I'm back from Colorado, and I think I'll start posting here :)

Another version to pay for... But hey, we're getting MPEG 4, and I'm sure that that wasn't cheap for Apple...

I wonder how the MPEG-LA licensing thing worked out...

with compression that good, I wonder what it could do for Final Cut Pro users

yeah, it will really help me as i get edits approved by the guy i'm editing for.... he is in LA and i'm in PA... so it should make it easier to see what he thinks

i knocked the video and audio sliders (data rate) almost all the way down, and changed some of the streaming settings. kept it at full size.... and the same clip is now down to 408 k....

promising indeed.

I am quite sure that Apple has released it to try an steal back some of the thunder that Microsoft has tried to steal, I would not be supprised if tomorrow (if M$ release something else) Apple might release another minor update. (I am not called QT6 a minor update)

From the documentation it looks like you'll have to buy a new one. MPEG4 wasn't cheap for Apple and the codecs you bought in the previous version aren't the same.

It's worth it.

New iTunes coming?

So, does iTunes automagically recognize it and play/rip AAC MPEG 4 audio? If not, how long do you all thing 'till a new version of iTunes that does comes out?

I've basically installed it but I need to restart which I can't do until my computer finishes compiling all these updates from fink which will take a loong time...

Heh heh, another Texan tourist ;)

I'm hoping that the keynote is QT6, I think it will work with 6 and 5 though. I predict seperate streams for 6 and 5. There would be a lot of people logging on wednesday morning who find they are unable to view the keynote if it's 6 only.
