quicktime, .avi and casio

i just got a casio exilim Z850. i get blank frames in iphoto when i import. I've head that an app called VLC will playback the .avi files when i transfer them to my hard drive. where do i find it? i've been resisting the blackhole of codecs, converters, etc. but that won't get me watching my camera's video output. if someone would please walk me thru setting up my mini to read the .avi file. (even the casio 1.1 converter doesn't play my video well) also do you know why anyone would update the camera's software - casio offers a video upgrade on their website.

What do you mean by "casio 1.1 converter doesn't play my video well"? I have that particular codec and not only Quicktime plays it very well, I can edit them in iMovie as well.

However, I don't use iPhoto to automatically move my photo and video files from my camera. I just copy them to a folder of my choice and then I import them into iPhoto. (I have iPhoto '06 and I have selected the preference of "do not copy files when added to library" option.) If you click on your .avi file in Finder, does Quicktime play it properly?

If you still insist on using VLC, just Google for the keyword VLC and you'll find the website where you can download it. Make sure you download the intel version if you have an intel Mac.

IIRC, Casio uses IV50 (Indeo™ Video 5.0) for its .avi video files. This is an ancient codec which was never ported to MacOS X. However, it is bundled with the most recent Classic version of QuickTime. Find a PPC-based Mac with Classic QuickTime Pro and you're golden.

flip4mac wmv works well also - it just a plugin that allows avi and wmv files to be pplayed in mac

Casio Exilim avi files on Mac

Here is a fix.....
Problem: avi files will not play
Do the following in the order shown.......
Install free Real Player Basic
Start iPhoto
Place Casio Exilim in USB cradle
Turn on Casio when in the cradle.
SANVOL appears in iPhoto sidebar...click on it
Choose the items to import
avi files will now play in iPhoto
GET INFO shows a Quicktime file opened by Real Player.
......
Do this any other way and the Casio will crash and will not respond.
To fix....
Remove the battery and re-install.
Casio will then respond normally.

This method has been verified on two separate Casio Exilim cameras.

Must have been limited to slightly older Casio cameras.

I have a 7 megapixel model that writes its videos in native quicktime format (that camera was new as of about 18 months ago).
