As much as I enjoy supporting Apple, I do not have the budget to buy Quicktime Pro. However, I DO need to export some . mov files I have made in iMovie to avi or something similar so my friend can play them...

Quicktime Pro is the only version that lets you export.
What can I use? I tried changing the .mov to .avi, but to no avail.

Why can't your friend play them? If they're on Windows, can't they just download QuickTime for Windows? It seems like most Windows users have it installed already anyway.

I guess if they're on Linux, that might be a problem. I don't know what options there are for watching .mov files on Linux.

Anyway, you could also use something like ffmpegX (free) to compress them to .mp4 or some other format that your friend can play.
