QuickTime & MPEG-2 Finally?

I've always thought is was a little ridiculous to charge $20 for that QT "Playback Component" software, but I'm wondering if it's going to be included for free now?

The reason I think this is because I never purchased it, and it appeared in my Software Update today! Could it be they are now including that functionality? Does anyone know what the situation is here?

I do have QT Pro, and FCP, but to my knowledge they DID NOT included that MPEG-2 playback ability. Before I could not play my MPEG-2 backups I was making with compressor, and now I can.

Just checked the Software updater in Panther 7B85 (with QT 6 Pro).
It was there!

Gonna check it with Jaguar (10.2.8) w/o QT 6 Pro aswell...

I just checked mine also, and it's right there! Awesome - I hope this is just the case for Pro users now.

That's wonderful. I can't wait to hear your results with the non-pro version.

But I feel like Apple may have come to grips with that awful add-on strategy. Probably from a huge lack of popularity. I think pro users should have had MPEG-2 playback capability from the start, but the free version should probably have it too (because windows media player does).

Didn't show up in 10.2.8 with QT 6.4, this was Standard and also Pro!
Could be two things:
Panther or FCP 4 installation which is required.... dunno.
Anybody have 10.2.8 with QT 6.4 and FCP 4 installed to check this?

Important bit:
Final Cut Pro 4 and DVD Studio Pro 2 Users
If you received your MPEG-2 Playback Component as part of Final Cut Pro 4 or DVD Studio Pro 2, an update is available via Apple Software Update.


Note: This update includes support for both QuickTime 6.3 and QuickTime 6.4.

Yes, I have Mac OS X 10.2.8, Final Cut Pro, and I have QuickTime Pro (because I got the serial number that came with FCP).

Recently I was able to download an MPEG-2 playback extension through software update. I did not previously own or use the $20 MPEG-2 add-on.

The Question I have is does this only apply to just QT Pro users with FCP, or is it for ALL QT Pro customers. If so, is it also for the free version of QuickTime?

P.S. I kinda lost the trail of things. Lets clarify the known answers to these questions. If you fit one of these scenarios, please post your results.
