QuickTime Player Trim — “This operation could not be completed.”

I usually use QuickTime Player to trim the ends of videos. BUT… QuickTime Player is failing to save large (1GB+) .mp4 videos after trimming. These videos are live RTSP streams from a WYZE Pan Cam saved by VLC as a 1920x1080 H264- MPEG-4 AVC at 15FPS. QuickTime Player can trim and save smaller videos captured exactly the same way. But not the larger ones.

FWIW I’m running the latest Mojave 10.14.5 update on both a 2014 Mini (8GB RAM) and a Late 2013 iMac (24GB RAM)

Any suggestions on how to make QTP save these large videos or a better app for trimming them?

I had the same problem, but it ended up being caused by the file format. I converted the file using Handbrake to another mp4, and then Quicktime trim and saved it fine.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll give it a try. Do you remember which variant of mp4 worked with QuickTime trim?

Thanks again for the tip to “convert” the .mp4 to .mp4 using HandBrake. Quicktime Player was able to trim the resulting .mp4 as you suggested. BUT…

In the process I realized I needed to know a whole lot more about video encoding, etc.. For example…
- why was the output .mp4 (733MB) from HandBrake, roughly 1/2 the size of the input .mp4 (1.42GB), even though I tried to set HandBrake to match the input (e.g. same fps, screen size, etc.)?
- why was QuickTime Player able to Trim the HandBrake output but not the input?
