You could download a divx codec, but since I already have VLC installed for binary files I just use that for avi files. Works perfectly.

Chances are if you install Perian >http://perian.org/< the movies will play just fine.
Failing that, have a look at VLC >http://www.videolan.org/<, as this contains load of codecs, an will pretty much play anything, even in full screen
