Guys, i have had a mac since last january, as a lifelong pc user i have been blown away by the beauty of the mac, its applications, superior hardware and of course its ease of use. i have a beautiful 17" PB 167mghz 1GB and there is not another laptop on the planet that i would trade it for. i can barely even look at my pc at my office, i will never go back to the dark side. having said all that, there are two mac applications that i cant believe jobs puts his stamp of approval on, iphoto and QT. for a company that prides itself on superior media applications i cant believe they put out this two dogs. i think QT is the most overhyped pile of dung i have ever seen.

i always buy the best of each application, i always get the pro version or plus version of everything. i have applications that i will never even learn how to use, im sick and i know i have a problem, im addicted to software. my rant is why in the hell VLC plays almost every damn video file on the planet and its free and since the last update, i cant even get QT pro to play simple mpgs with the audio AND video anymore. it crashes after playing wmv files now. i have every codec you can install on it. its getting where i dont even use it anymore. other than being able to encode certain files rather handily i dont even know why i have it much less pay for it!

i hope they come out quickly with some kind of fix for this bug between the ac3 codec and QT so i can at least play the files i used to be able to :mad:

why doesnt apple just buy freakin' VLC, add h.264 encoding and just put that engine in QT and make everyone happy?

Ranting because QT doesn't play back 'pirate' codecs? You hate VLC?

QT Pro has many pro codecs for professional use, like Pixlet, HDV, DVCPRO HD, JPEG2000, etc.

Quicktime Pro has many, many pro features that go beyond H.264 encoding, fullscreen playback, etc. I use QT Pro for professional use and it's rock solid and works like a champ.

what makes you think i have pirate codecs? last time i checked ac3 was free as well as divx and should be usuable for QT. now that we have cleared that up, are you going to tell me that QT plays more types of video than VLC? i love VLC by the way. are you able to play wmv files without it crashing after the latest update?
 
I can't say anything about the WMV codec because I haven't invested in that, but quicktime pro is very solid for me. It plays most every movie file I have, and for the ones it doesn't play, I just break out VLC. VLC is slow, but it's codec library has many codecs that QT doesn't. Then again, there are files that QT can play and VLC cant. It's a tradeoff. Yes I hope that QT will eventually be able to play all the files I have, but for now, it's encoding capabilities, interface, stability, and speed, hardly render it an "overhyped pile of dung". :rolleyes:

lol, i agree its not a pile of dung but i disagree that it plays more types of video than VLC. i did install the latest WMV update and its my understanding that it is causing the crashes with wmv files now and some other things.

i guess my point is that i dont understand why QT Pro doesnt include all the codecs that VLC has. is there some technical reason why it cant use them or is it just that apple doesnt feel like including them?

Apple can't buy VLC, except possibly to kill it. The reason? VLC's ability to play as many formats as it does is based on the fact that its developer reverse engineered [read hacked] many of those formats. As for WMV, the Windows port of the player simply accesses Microsoft Window's built-in WMV frameworks. Add to this the fact that VLC's developer is a teenager who distributed the player at no charge. Apple as a reputable commercial enterprise can't have any part of that. If it were to distribute VLC, Apple could be liable for a substantial fraction of MacOS X sales revenue in addition to punitive damages.

Hey that works perfectly .... :D The other fix I found for this problem was installing divx codec. I suppose there are several other codecs that would help, but I only know that one. I would post a link but I forgot where I got the divx from but if you can find it does help open many files in quicktime. And then there is this one www.alfanet.it/squared5 . This will reformat some videos so that they will play in quicktime.
