I am curious when QTX will finally be worked out.

Apple seems curiously tardy or negligent with QT, which means most of us still have to jump between QTX and QT7Pro to get anything done. It's a gaping flaw with Apple. Annoying. They need to spend a year, piece together QT, smooth out much of DVD Player and iTunes, the iTunes/TV store, Calendar, etc.

I know this isn't a solution for Quicktime specifically per-se, but you might want to consider using VLC as a workaround. It supports every video codec and filetype known to man, basically.

MPlayerX which is a free download from the app store plays avi files and it has a quicktime look.

It's possible (I haven't checked) that QT payer X just no longer supports Quicktime 7 (the framework) like it used to in Snow Leopard and Lion.
Perian is a QT 7 plugin, not a QTX plugin (simply because QTX does not take plugins yet). QT X supports perian and all "legacy" QT7 plugins/codecs via a 32-bit process called "legacymediabridge.videodecompressionserver".

If this bridge process is gone in ML, that may mean that QT X can now take plugins. There's a new framework in ML called "videotoolbox" that deals with video decompression. It's mentioned in the release notes but doesn't have any programming guide yet. It should probably be fully documents in some of the next developer previews. Hopefully, this framework will allow third-party plugins, so that perian and flip4mac support the new architecture (and so that we can finally get rid of the indexing time required by containers like mkv and wmv).

I reinstalled the Perian dmg last night, and that overwrote my origial perian install, and restarted. now some avi will play. except those with xvid. SO as far as I can tell all vids will play except xvid, wmv and MKV which was lost on the switch, to lion. SO basically uninstalling and reinstalling by the preference panel is not sufficient, you need to reinstall via the dmg.

Try To Remove Flip4Mac

Hi there,

If you also have Flip4Mac installed (not the latest), try to remove it and reinstall Perian 1.2.3. AVI should work for QT X again.
