QuickTime6 and MPEG-4

On a recent trip to the Apple site I found this image/link, very interesting, no? They also have a session during WWDC on the subject, not very helpful, but maybe portentous.

This session will focus on QuickTime's MPEG-4 implementation. Topics include audio, video, and systems technologies in QuickTime 6, interoperability, and future directions in the MPEG-4 space.

I hope this is true, and I also hope it will be released soon, I really love Quicktime its better than the alternatives (apart from something I once found on a Unix box at work but the machine died )

Quicktime 6 sounds exciting.

But I'm really not going to be happy unless we have support for it in iTunes and the iPod at the same time. Now that would be ultimately sweet. Maybe that's what's taking so long. MPEG-4 could have been done and taken care of but Apple needed to take care of making it work with everything else.

how specifically do you want to see it work with itunes?

and i don't see movies coming to the pod yet... just doesn't seem to fit for me.. but i have little or no say in what apple does. ha

I think that with the integration of MPEG-4 into Quicktime Apple will eventually distribute MPEG codes into their other programs (iMovie, Final Cut Pro, iTunes, etc.) so that each Application can import and export MPEG data.

If I am not mistaken, Final Cut Pro cannot read .mpeg movies from Quicktime, so you have to cinvert them back and forth using QT Pro.

I have the Quicktime 6 Free Beta for OS X and it works extremely well. The MPEG-1 video now has no stuttering when first opened. I can even use Present Movie back and forth to view .mov and .mpg files in full screen with no skipping.

MPEG-4 and Quicktime just might be the start of the integration of the new codec into other applications. I cannot wait to see what happens after Quicktime.

Any time is a great time for iPod.
