I have some friends with the annoying habit of texting me at 1am on every drinking holiday. Because of the nature of my job, I keep my ringer turned all the way up. But when I get a loud text alert in the wee hours, it scares the snot out of me.

Is there an app to automatically turn my ringer volume down between certain hours? I've searched all over the app store, and there doesn't appear to be "an app for that".

There is one if your Jailbroken, but otherwise, no. Would you just want it to mute the texts and not calls? Actually, I don't even know if the Jailbroken app will do that. Unfortunately, the iPhone doesn't seem to have great alert handling system like say a Blackberry.

Go into settings>sounds and change new text message to none.

Yeah, but then I won't get an alert during the day.

Sounds like there is a good opportunity for somebody to sell an app.

It's a bit of a hassle, but I think what Gav2k means is when you go to bed, turn the text alert sound off and then when you wake up, turn it back on.

It depends. If it's just an app you configure to silence the phone on a certain schedule and then it does it's thing in the background, it won't work. Apple won't allow applications to run in the background.

Now I don't know if it's possible or not, but maybe an app that silences the phone when the app is launched will work.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Tell your pals to stop texting you !!!

Odds are you do not, but do you have a landline? If you do, silence the iphone at bedtime and forward all calls to your landline and then end call forwarding in the morning.

Auto Silent for Jailbroken phones works reasonably well. It has settings to silence all but allow phone calls to alert, etc. However, it requires JB, and it does not work flawlessly on schedule. I found it remained silent past the wake up time, and did not silence immediately on schedule. I am guessing some sort of activity needs to occur to wake the app... it supposedly works without multi-tasking.

Given the 4.0 OS is rumored to have multi-tasking, it is possible an app like this could launch and remain in the background and accomplish this. I have also made the suggestion to Apple via feedback, it is pretty annoying that we do'nt have more control over the settings on the phone.

i hear ya on this!! i use the alarm on the iphone..so i keep the volume up all the way, but that also means when i get a drunk text/call, it wakes me up as well. so i cant win.

From my experience the alarm will go off (i.e. sound) even with the iphone muted with the silent switch. Quite convenient if you ask me.
