Here's a little background:

I went to the Apple Store yesterday and bought a MBP 15". Kept it plugged in to charge the battery and it was of course quiet. I used it on battery for a little bit, but the AC and the TV were on, so I didn't notice anything. I then tried to instal bootcamp, but wouldn't install without doing the firmware update. So I ran the firmware update and installed XP.

When I got home tonight, the apartment was super quiet, and of course I heard the whine for the first time. Once I noticed it, it was the only thing I heard, and of course it was super annoying. But only on battery power, it goes away when being charged.

I then ran XP to do a couple of things, and low and behold, the computer is quiet! No whine!! I thought - "wow, good thing it only lasted for a couple of minutes. that's the end of that."

So I then rebooted OSX and what do you know ...... it's back! I did a little searching and found out about QuietMBP. I installed it, and the program works like a charm! No more whine, don't know how it'll affect batery life though. I can't image it'll kill it that much, as I usually but the computer to sleep if I'm not doing anything on it.

For those who have a MacBook Pro and have the whine, run QuietMBP. It works!

For QuietMBP users, what do you have the slider set at?

Mine's at 140

Maybe we can start a poll .....

Try MagicNoise Killer! Works a little better than QuietMBP

Thanks, but I tried ...... unfortunately I'm running 10.4.6.

It doesn't work for me, only QuietMBP does. I haven't tried any of the other tricks, but can deal if QuietMBP keeps working.

Pre-keyboard update, the "quiet" programs worked for the same reason most Windows XP installs didn't whine...because of the USB bug. Simply plugging in a USB2 device makes the whine go away, but it also significantly reduces battery life. The keyboard update for OSX fixed this bug, but causes the whine to not stop when using programs. Microsoft still hasn't fixed the issue in Windows XP.
