So I needed something to do, and I decided to stop by the local Apple store to get my fix of Appleness. Some people are speculating tomorrow for an MB update, so I asked an employee about a timeframe.

This is exactly what was said:

Quicksilver: "I'm looking for a 15" Macbook Pro for school, but Apple's still running the Core 2 Duo 9600GT setups...I know there are some i5s and i7s in laptops out there, and I'm gonna hold out till I see something like that..."

Apple employee: "I don't personally know anything, and they [Apple] don't give us any forewarning about them. However, and I'm not even supposed to tell you this, check websites like MacRumors and get a feel from what they're talking about there, I mean that's what I do"

I got a good chuckle afterward :D

yesterday i got from a mac employee was in a robot like voice " we don't know about future products " and smiled and moved on to the next person in line waiting for the genius bar ha ha
 
I'm not blaming anybody...where did that idea come up?


I just thought I'd ask, hell...anything is worth a try at this point.
 
I'm telling you guys Apple Employees that work at the brick and motor stores are at the bottom of the totem pole. They do not know anything about when products are released. I think they'll get products in like 3-5 days before they are released so they employees can start to look over features and specs. So when people have questions they are able to answer them. But other than that Apple does not want them to know much of anything and why would they. If they told their employees everything then the sales would come to a dead halt weeks before new products are released. I think you'll start to see pictures of shipments leak before you see a release.

I think that is the case for new products like the iPad and iPhone (1st gen). But there is not much to learn for a spec bump, they probably receive boxes with "do not open until" stamped.

Can anyone who works/used to work at an Apple store elaborate on how and when spec bumped products come in?

Apple store employees always tell me that they find out the same day the shipments arrive at their store... guys we have to go after the truckers who deliver this stuff: they are the ones who will know. Anyone want to go to the truckstop with me and trade "favors" for information on new MBP's? ;)

The truckers won't know. You'd be better off bothering the people at retailers' corporate offices. Some data entry henchperson had to create those dummy SKUs.

Mac Specialists and the Genii do not have any knowledge of upcoming products. Occasionally you will encounter the Apple employee who will slyly direct you to MacRumors. It is always fun dealing with those guys.

If this is true about them getting new products 3-5 days in advance, then the above mentioned apple guy (the one who said to look at this site) either is a helluva liar, or we're definitely not getting an update tomorrow (or the store guys are really good at hiding inventory).

As someone pointed out earlier, there is no reason for them to get a simple refresh 3-5 days before launch. It would only make sense for becoming familiarized with a new product like the iPad.

I'm with you on that. I don't see why they would have to become familiar with something that isn't a totally new type of product. Sure, the specs will be different, but at least the general hierarchy will still be there. There will still be good, better and best macbook pros.

Probably the guy whom you talked to at Apple Store is reading this right now. :D
 
There should be a "check macrumors.com" sign at all Apple stores.
 
I wouldn't be surprised if Apple Store employees all sign NDA's too. I'd be shocked if they didn't guard the little info they get as if their jobs depended on it because their jobs probably DO depend on it.

Even if that guy had a brand new i7 MBP in the break room, s/he probably wouldn't risk leaking anything.
