Anyone using a 6870 try audio over a straight HDMI port?

I heard the MDP ports lack audio, I was wondering if the HDMI is different.

You can't do audio from the GPU since OS X doesn't swing that way.

I believe the reason that the 2010 and onward MBPs can send audio over HDMI is because Apple wired in audio to the MiniDisplayPort (or TB port now). But don't quote me on that.

Disregard that, OS X can send audio over HDMI

Yes, you can. Not sure about the 6870, but in general, OS X does support audio over HDMI.
