Hi i have an old g4 tower, the dual 450 (gigabit) to be exact and im still plugging away with the stock ati rage pro 128. The card blows, this i know, and im finally thinking i should update it and give my computer a year or 2 more before i get a new machine. My issue comes down to my monitor, its the 17" CRT from apple with ADC connector. Something about the Radeon 9000pro has peaked my interest and i would like to put it in my machine, technically everything should work without issue, however ive read that is not so. I've seen reasons all the way from not enough power to run the display (via the agp/adc connector) to it selects the wrong resolutions... some says its been fixed with an update, others just dont know... im wondering if anyone knows the answer. Will the Radeon 9000 pro work with the 17" CRT ADC display in a dual 450 g4? or do i go with a geforce2mx or radeon 7500?

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Technically it should work...

Everything i read thats official says that everything should work just fine, however every so often i find things like this

"The Radeon 9000 is the second video card upgrade that I have purchased for my Gigabit Ethernet PowerMac (the first was a GeForce 2 MX with which I replaced the stock Rage 128 Pro). The performance of the card is exemplary.

The only reason I didn't give the card a '10' is due to its lack of support for the Apple 17" ADC CRT Studio Display. (it works sporadically at best with this monitor) This issue is not made clear in ATI's sales literature, and it should be.

Fortunately for me, I was in the process of getting a 17" LCD Studio Display, with which it works perfectly.

So, a '9' overall, but a definite '10' for pure performance."

that was found on IMG at http://www.imgmagazine.com/reviews/user_reviews.php?ID=363

now i also know i read somewhere that this issue may have possibly been fixed, if so im all over it, if not... well back to the drawing board.

Apple had the Coolest CRT ever made PERIOD. too bad they dont work with the ADC adapter. Also the only incompatabilities with the CRT ADC connections is with the ADC adapter because it does not have the right amount of power output or somthing. But the card should work fine, technically the card does not have anything to do with the power part of the ADC it just gets it from that special connector and passes it straight through to the connector. But power might not be the only thing that makes the 17' incompatible with some cards.

Interesting...

Yeah i never thought about that... the computer is powering the ADC port, so as long as my computer is giving the display enough juice it should work... I'm feeling more inclined to believe the issue was with resolutions, choosing ones that didn't quite match between the 2 devices... thus ending up with a display that didn't seem to power on...
