I have been using this iMac for a few weeks only. The config is i9, 4TB SSD, 128GB Ram running latest Monterey (edit: same with Ventura 13.0). It overall works very well but doing some light gaming I noticed the GPU momentarily stalling. Macs fan control shows stalls happen when the GPU hits 105 ºC. Then I realized GPU temps never fall below 90ºC when idling (87ºC with fan at constant max speed). So I installed GPU Monitor to see what is going on with the 580X. Before this iMac I had the very same config excepting the GPU which was the Radeon Pro 575X and never ever saw this GPU high temps issue. The iMac is connected to 2 external monitors (2K + 4:3 1600x1200)

I attach a snap of main GPU details idling vs geekbench5 test taken with GPU monitor app.

Is it normal the 580X draws _66W at idle_ and peaking at _224W_ at Max use ?

Is it normal the 580X idles at 91ºC and stays over 100ºC always while gaming?

regards,

Ruben

Quick update here, just unplugging the external monitors brings the power consumption 40-50% down at idle and temps go back to a more acceptable 75ºC-78ºC. However gaming brings the power and temperatures back to scary 105ºC. It seems the system is fine, no errors in any diagnostic, it just can't dissipate the heat the 580X is able to generate under the load that comes with either an external display or 3D use. In a nutshell, because of the lower thermal dissipation I could do more with the 575X GPU like triple head display without high temps at idle or light gaming without the GPU stalling due to hiting 105ºC-106ºC...

I wonder if the fact that Memory stays at 100% its potential frequency for the sole reason there is another display plugged has anything to do with the high power consumption (and therefore heat) of the 580X GPU at idle. Maybe it's not the 580X itself the culprit but a bad driver?
