I have a Mac Pro 7,1 16-core with a Radeon Pro 580x.

I read somewhere that you can utilize Apple's MX module from that Radeon Pro 580x to facilitate the installation/replacement for a more powerful GPU. I'm totally new to all this and may not be making any sense, but this machine with that 580x just isn't handling the footage we are editing. (4K Arri RAW or Prores 4444). I'd love to find a way to keep that ridiculous investment functioning. What are my options that would make financial sense in light of the fact that an M2 MacBook Pro would currently run circles around this machine?

For macOS, it's just a matter if you can find a compatible GPU.

e.g. You can buy a normal 6800XT, then justs swap it into your Mac Pro 7,1. And it will work straight away (assuming you keep your macOS up to date).

It's not the 580X make you can install a more powerful GPU, but the newer macOS contain the drivers to support newer / more powerful GPU.

I would say 6800XT or 6900XT would be one option, but be careful that you get one that will fit properly, these cards are LONG.

I think you can still use the 580X as well in the machine along with the newer GPU.

Otherwise keep a watch out for W6900X MPX or W6800X DUO MPX (64GB) at discount prices.

Where would I look for discount prices on those cards? I had already seen that Apple is selling the W6800X DUO MPX for $5,000 🤯. Can't begin to justify that. As far as the proper fit for a 6800XT, where can I find that answer before purchase? Is there more than one version?

B&H had some MPX modules a while ago at about $1000 off the normal AUD$ price from Apple. Not cheap but still less than what Apple charged.

Otherwise keep watch on Amazon and eBay.
